In a thrilling display of skill and determination, our volleyball team emerged victorious in their much-anticipated pink game against De La Salle. The atmosphere was electric as players adorned in vibrant pink jerseys showcased not only their prowess on the court but also their support for a meaningful cause.
But the event was more than just a game–it was a symbol of unity and solidarity as both teams came together to raise awareness for breast cancer.
The match itself was a rollercoaster of intense rallies and strategic plays. Our team demonstrated exceptional teamwork and precision, with each player contributing to the overall success. The crowd roared with excitement as crucial points were scored on both ends, showcasing each team’s resilience and commitment to securing the win.
“The mindset was really understanding that this is your home,” Senior Captain Keelen Landrum said, “ that nobody comes in here, and they don’t take over your home without you putting up a fight. I think that was kind of really the main focus of that week’s practice for us. Our practice plan was just working on finishing a lot of times. We get content within the first one to two sets and forget we have another third set to play. We just need to remind ourselves that the game is not over until it’s over.”
Off the court, the community rallied around the event, with fans, families, and supporters donning various shades of pink to honor those affected by breast cancer. The volleyball team’s initiative extended beyond the game, fostering a sense of community engagement and social responsibility. The team paired up with Krewe De Pink, an organization devoted to raising awareness for breast cancer, and raised over $1,000 in concessions to donate to the organization.
“We were grinding and hustling till the very end of the game, but at the end of the day, we got the job done,” Coach Artis said. “ We represented Willow, and it was an exciting game. I think everybody had fun. I think the fans had fun. It was a good moment. We raised money for a good cause, so it was a good experience.”
The victory wasn’t just about the final score, though. It was a testament to the team’s ability to unite people for a cause greater than the sport itself. As the final whistle blew, sealing the triumph against De La Salle, cheers echoed through the Lions’ den. The win not only added another victory to the team’s record but also solidified their role as promoters of positive change. The pink game was a shining example of how sports can transcend competition, bring people together for a common purpose, and leave a lasting impact on both the players and the community.
